The Hulk (Albert Poole) first appeared in STRANGE TALES #75 (1960), but would have its name changed to Grutan

Then another Hulk appeared in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #21, but would have its name changed to Xemnu

Then another Hulk appeared in TALES TO ASTONISH #21, but would later be changed to Glop

And then yet another Hulk appeared in INCREDIBLE HULK #1, causing the previous versions to be renamed in reprints.

Did Shelley's Frankenstein predate the Grundy rhyme? or what of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde whom Hulk drew from? Wolfman stories as well?

I actually thought Atomic Skull was pretty cool in the Superman vs Elite cartoon.

Yeah, I know, but I wanted to have fun with it is all. Especially since some people don't know there were other versions of Hulk and Ghost Rider (and even Spider-Man) before the more popular versions were created.

To be fair, it's almost impossible to come up with 100% new idea for superpowered beings, there is a lot of back and forth. Think of a power that is fairly standard for superheroing and you'll pretty quickly think of several characters with that power.

Hulk and Grundy are very different via personality and even how their powers work to a large degree. Hulk is more of a re-vamping of Dr Jekell/Mr Hyde idea than Grundy to me than taken from DC's soloman Grundy (who in turn took it from a 19th century nursery rhyme).

So the characters themselves remain very different.

Though these characters aren’t necessarily the same, and if you think about it, there are only so many types of superpowers to go around. Like someone that runs really fast, is very likely to be in both. It also was more than these characters. Fawcett Comics originally owned Captain Marvel, there was a huge lawsuit between where DC took Fawcett to court over whether or not Captain Marvel (DC) and Superman were too much alike.

    But for your list:

    1. Solomon Grundy (DC) or Hulk (Marvel) – Soloman Grundy is from a 19th century nursey rhyme. But his DC debut was in 1944, Hulk never showed up until 1962.

    2. Martian Manhunter (DC) or Vision (Marvel) – Martian Manhunter debuted in 1955. Original vision came out in 1940 via Timely Comics (Marvel’s predecessor) and the more commonly known Vision came onboard in 1968.

    3. Doctor Fate (DC) or Doctor Strange (Marvel) – Dr Fate arrived in 1940 and Dr Strange in 1963.

    4. Plastic Man/Elongated Man (DC) or Mister Fantastic (Marvel) – Plastic Man 1941, and Mr Fantastic in 1961.

    5. Aquaman (DC) or Submariner (Marvel) -  Aquaman came out in 1941 and Submariner 1939, making him one of Marvel’s oldest heroes.

    7. Darkseid/Mongul (DC) or Thanos (Marvel) – Darkseid was 1970 and Thanos was 1973.

    8. Metron (DC) or The Watcher (Marvel) – Metron 1971 and the Watcher was 1963.

    9. The Flash (DC) or Quicksilver (Marvel) – The Flash 1940, and Quicksilver in 1964.

    10. Atom (DC) or Ant-Man (Marvel) – Original Atom was 1940 and Ant-Man showed up in 1962.

    11. Atomic Skull (DC) or Ghost Rider (Marvel) – Atomic Skull was 1976 and Ghost Rider in 1972.

    12. Clay Face (DC) or Sand Man (Marvel) – Clayface was 1940 and Sandman was 1963.

There are lots more similar characters though, more crossover than you think!

    Thanks for the info.

The one that I was really concerned with was Hulk/Solomon Grundy.

I guess my friends were right about Hulk, being made after Grundy...calling Hulk - marvels copy of Grundy.

My interest in this resurfaced in a recent battle post concerning the (Power/fluctuation of Grundy.

I thought that DC was trying to make Grundy to be as powerful as the Hulk - I had no clue about the (old version) of Grundy, that could defeat the entire Justice League.

When I came across this post on another site / I decided to repost it to get the skinny on it's truthfulness.

I was reading this post and would like someone to clarify this as true or false?

I'm a little shocked at how many Marvel characters have equivelant versions as D.C. characters or vice versa. For anyone that knows the history, who came first and were the two competing comic companies that desperate that they had to make similar characters, with similar personalities and powers? Here are a few - which came first?

    1. Solomon Grundy (DC) or Hulk (Marvel)
    2. Martian Manhunter (DC) or Vision (Marvel)
    3. Doctor Fate (DC) or Doctor Strange (Marvel)
    4. Plastic Man/Elongated Man (DC) or Mister Fantastic (Marvel)
    5. Aquaman (DC) or Submariner (Marvel)
    7. Darkseid/Mongul (DC) or Thanos (Marvel)
    8. Metron (DC) or The Watcher (Marvel)
    9. The Flash (DC) or Quicksilver (Marvel)
    10. Atom (DC) or Ant-Man (Marvel)
    11. Atomic Skull (DC) or Ghost Rider (Marvel)
    12. Clay Face (DC) or Sand Man (Marvel)
