So, I just read Winter Soldier 14.  I'm not really happy with how they ended Widow Hunt.  I wish Marvel would quit with the mind control of the Black Widow.  It's getting old, & a little tired.  My guess is they needed a convenient way to make room for a romantic relationship with Hawkeye, courtacy of the amazing performances of Renner & Johannson in the Avengers movie.  Personally I'm ok with that.  It was the movie that got me back in the comics.
I'd like to see Hawkeye & Black Widow as a strong, long term couple.  But draw it out & really develop it.

Then, next month (Feb. 2013) we'll get Secrete Avengers, where the memory of the missions will be wiped from the operative's heads.  Clint & Natasha will be big players on this team, it appears.  My guess is this memory wipe practice will eventually bite SHIELD in the butt, plus then Natasha should remember Bucky & have to choose between him & Clint (or no one I guess).  Good timing for this drama?  Around the release of the new movie Captain America: Winter Soldier of course!  (it could even start around then & be drug out until Avengers 2 comes out.  would be perfect timing for all those movie fans who fell in love with Clint+Natasha at the Avengers movie & are now checking out the comics).  Of course she should end up with Barton.

By the way, does anyone know when Widow Hunt happened in time?  Before the trip to Mars we've been seeing in Avengers, I'm assuming, as Natasha's hair is cut shorter.  Will someone go into the style change?  DeConnick maybe in an upcoming Avengers Assemble?

I wish we could get an author to find a voice for the Black Widow like Fraction has done with Hawkeye.  Really, the best writers for Natasha right now are in Fan Fiction.  Perhaps DeConnick could breath some life into Natasha.

End of ramble.  Sorry for basically reposting a comment I made in another thread, it seemed this location was appropriate too.

The Black Widow actually has a signature weapon: the Widow's bite.  It's not as prevelant in the movies, but it's there.  It's obvious in the comics, depending on how much & how closely you read I guess.  But if you're looking for more info on the character I'd suggest the marvel wiki.

She does kindof have 'powers' also - she received a version of the supersoldier 'syrum' during her tumulturous stay in the red room which gives her inhanced healing & longer life (nothing like Wolverine or Deadpool, but handy anyway).

But I think she's badazz because she relies on her own stregnth and skills.  She's kindof a fem fetale, which many find appealing.  Also she had an extremely difficult past / childhood that she works to overcome, including making up for the many sins of her past, & brainwashing.  I'm guessing they're going to go into that a bit in the upcoming Avengers Assemble #12.

I was going to start a new thread on this topic but this seems an appropriate place as ever

can someone please explain to me...

what exactly is Black Widow's appeal?

She has no powers, no signature weapon, no particular cause/vendetta.

I don't understand why anyone would want to see her on the Avengers alongside Thor, Hulk and Iron man.  At least Cap and Hawkeye has some cool weapons, and characterisations that make them appealing (though Hawkeye is a bit vague in the movie but a fire cracker in the comics).

Just read Winter Soldier tpb 1 (1-5), BW's just does somersaults and twists in the entire comic.  That seems to be her thing.

Just another character that has to be made to look awesome clearing house to over compensate for the fact that they do very little

Just read Winter Soldier #13, where a bunch of guys are all going to go save the Black Widow.  I really hope when they get there she gets really pissed because she was undercover and handling it just fine.  Damsel in distress does not really become Natasha, in my opinion.
