I wish there was a way for my message to make its way to all eyes in the world. However, I know that the best I can get is here in the forums. I think I know why Marvel is delaying any talks of a Black Panther film: public ignorance.
Back in circa June-July 2012, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, came under heavy fire from T’Challa fans for his comments in response to why the African king’s film came unannounced in place of the “highly” anticipated Ant Man & Guardians of the Galaxy (GOTG) films. By him saying that the film would be too difficult to produce because of creating the fictional nation of Wakanda from the ground up proves much more difficult than the settings of Thor 1 & 2 (Asgard & space) and GOTG (space), he all but threw himself under a massive bus.
That excuse doesn’t quite address the real issues the production may/will face. There is no issues with every fan that knows the ins and outs of T’Challa’s lore. However, the average non-comic book reader is totally oblivious to that lore. Most of them believe that he is a firm representation of the old & new Black Panther Party. HISTORY ALERT!!!
All three Black Panther entities have absolutely no connections with each other. The comic hero debuted in July of 1966. The party debuted Oct later that year. Did Stan Lee and Jack Kirby really coerce with Party founder, Huey P. Newton? Highly unlikely. As an additional note, the Newton foundation publicly condemns all activities involving the new Party for their brash and racist tactics. Most anti-Panther Party people associate them with the comics and will therefore never support and allow their kids to watch anything with T’Challa in it. Maybe another reason he didn’t make the cut for the new Avengers Assemble cartoon? Possibly so.
If my message could make its way to Marvel Studios, my thought would be: I understand the issues you face, Kevin & company. I empathize with you implicitly. Want a simple solution to your problem?….. Re-title the Hero’s name to just “Panther” and his possible future solo tile as “Panther the Perilous”.
Look, I don’t have a problem with the Black Panther name, but I do want him included in the cinematic universe and I want his character to be a successful box office hit. Make the change; save the cheerleader, save the Panther.
