Their PR folks randomly sent me their new album, "If You're Young," and after giving it a listen, I was hooked. So I reached out to see if the boys in the band were Marvel Comics fans--and of course they were! So I showed Henry and Ian around, then sent off a few questions to test their Marvel mettle! Agent M: Who are your favorite Marvel characters? Henry: It's the old standard but I have to say Spider-Man. I feel like a lot of musicians can probably relate to Peter Parker's social awkwardness and struggles with girls. It definitely rang some bells with me. I recently got SPIDER-MAN: BLUE by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. I loved it. Tim Sale's art is unbelievable. I'm a big artist guy. And after reading that one it made me start to collect more of Tim's work and the rest of his series with Loeb. Ian: I've become a pretty big fan of Namor. He associates with some questionable characters, and he's pretty funny when he goes on his little "destroy all human civilization" tantrums. Magneto is also pretty great. He was totally badass played by Michael Fassbender in the "X-Men: First Class" movie. Henry: My oldest memory of Marvel is probably watching the Spider-Man cartoons on TV after school. And also playing the Spider-Man and X-Men movie video games at a friend's house when I was 12. After that period I kind of stopped following everything for a bit. But just recently a good friend of ours, Jake Lazarowitz, started pointing me in the right direction of what to check out now. Like the new [Mark] Waid DAREDEVIL books. He's a big comic fan and we share a similar taste. He's actually a writer himself and just finished a web series "De Novo" that's coming out online in October. I've heard so much about the developing project, I'm really excited to see the final cut. It ties in to a musical score a friend developed and a movie they're all working on. Ian: When I was a little kid I came across a free FANTASTIC FOUR comic at a street fair, and I went home and read it like 10 times in a row.
Henry: Hmm, I think I'd probably have some Mister Fantastic stretching powers. I get called lanky a lot. So my limbs are already going to extreme distances. I think our drummer Nick would have incredible speed. He's always zipping around and being hyperactive. Even when he's drumming it doesn't seem like he's sitting down. Ian: I would take either telekinesis, or just the ability to float like one foot off the ground. It'd be so understated, I think it would really mess with people's heads. Andrew wants to be a vampire, if that counts, and Mike wants to have the power of invisibility, but doesn't want to say why. Henry: Marvel fans should check out The Static Jacks because we write songs that deal with the issues super heroes deal with when they're not being super heroes. How to get the girl. How to keep the girl. How to balance your life. Also, we always look at our songs from a cinematic standpoint. We always question if a song would fit the new X-Men trailer or something. Agent M: Where can Marvel fans go to get more from the Static Jacks? Henry: If you live in the New England area, you can get our album at any Newbury Comics! Or, you know, online on iTunes, Amazon or other stores like Barnes And Noble and FYE. Also find The Static Jacks at thestaticjacks.com and @thestaticjacks on Twitter. But, between Judy Stephens and our video crew, we took a ton of photos! So, below, you'll find the rest of the day's photos. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for my interview with The Misfits on Marvel.com and Marvel's YouTube channel! And, of course, visit misfits.com and look out for their new album, "The Devil's Rain," on sale October 4!
\m/ \m/ --Agent M [Edited By Moderator] The Misfits Visit Marvel ComicsToday we had legendary punk rock band The Misfits come by Marvel HQ! I brought them around for a tour of Marvel Comics, they met some editors (who are also fans!) and we shot a video interview. The video will be on Marvel.com soon, but our crack photographer Judy Stephens took a ton of great photos. I've been super super busy, but I wanted to share a few photos from today. More photos, and more details, tomorrow!
\m/ \m/ --Agent M [Edited By Moderator] Today I met the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn MichaelsAND IT WAS AWESOME! We met Shawn because he was in town helping to promote Activision's upcoming slate of hunting games like Big Game Hunter 2012 and Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai. We have a video and some fun stuff planned for Marvel.com, but I couldn't help but post this photo today (taken by the amazing Rich Herrera) and show Shawn (with some comics!), Marvel.com Associate Editor Ben Morse and myself. More soon! \m/ \m/ --Agent M Jonathan Coulton Visits Marvel ComicsThis post has been a few weeks comin', but it's finally here. I got a PR email from one of my music contacts with info on upcoming Jonathan Coulton goodness and reached out to see if the geektastic singer-songwriter (You know the songs from the Portal video games? He made those.) would want to visit us at Marvel HQ for a tour and some fun times. Seems like a natural fit, right? There's lotsa audience crossover and he has plenty of fans here at the House of Ideas (including me, natch), so I was happy to hear he was on board. When I emailed folks in the office to let them know he was coming through, I got a particularly large number of very excited replies. Funny enough, someone I DIDN'T email about JoCo coming was AMAZING SPIDER-MAN writer Dan Slott. But word spread and he called me, frantically, to get more info. I invited Dan to come by the office and meet Mr. Coulton and if you scroll down a bit, you'll see a funny video I shot of Dan and Jonathan chatting. Enjoy the photos (taken by Judy Stephens) and you can find Jonathan at jonathancoulton.com as well as @jonathancoulton.com on Twitter.
That's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN writer Dan Slott and Jonathan Coulton. Watch the video below to see Dan geek out for Jonathan. It was rad.

I've been listening to them for years and we even come from the same music scene (LIHC represent!), so it was fun chatting with them and showing them around the House of Ideas. Adam and John are both Marvel fans, and we've interviewed them both on Marvel.com. You can read our interview with Adam here and our recent feature with John here. They're awesome dudes and we had fun strolling through Marvel. Check out some photos (taken by Judy Stephens) below:
Check out Taking Back Sunday's latest self-titled album, find them on tour and politely stalk on the Internets at @tbsofficial, @TheJohnNolan & @AdamDamnLazzara on Twitter and takingbacksunday.com! \m/ \m/ --Agent M [Edited By Moderator] Shai Hulud Visits Marvel ComicsA few weeks back, singer Mike Moynihan and guitarist Matt Fox from the stellar metal band Shai Hulud stopped by Marvel HQ. I've been listening to them since 1997, so it was my pleasure to show them how we do things here. Fortunately, the dudes really appreciated seeing Marvel, since they're legit True Believers. I even asked Matt a few questions to gauge just how geeky they are. Agent M: Who’s your favorite Marvel character? Matt Fox: As cruel as it is to put one over all others… I'd have to say Taa's last remaining son Galan, colloquially known throughout the universe as GALACTUS. Why? He devours worlds. Agent M: What’s your oldest memory of Marvel comics? Matt Fox: As far back as I can remember I always loved Marvel's super heroes but never read any of the comics; I just watched all the cartoons and the live-action shows on television (even the '70s Spider-Man, Captain America and Dr. Strange shows!). The first Marvel comic I ever read was an issue of WEST COAST AVENGERS which is what got me into actually reading the books. But thinking about it, my first experience with anything Marvel was probably Spider-Man's sporadic appearances on the children's show "The Electric Company," definitely my favorite segment of the program. In addition to the aforementioned, another early Marvel memory was in the late '70s or early '80s, I had a Spider-Man "web-maker" toy which was a tube of web-like substance that you "spun" yourself! It came with tiny red, plastic Spidey villains that you could catch into the web. Such great fun! I shouldn't forget that my mother would always say to me, "Eat your vities, Spidey" to get me to eat my vitamins as a young child. Agent M: Why should Marvel fans check out Shai Hulud? Matt Fox: Marvel fans should check us out because we are true kindred spirits, keeping to the fringes rather than adopting the interests of the mainstream. We often have more in common with other comic book fanatics than we do fellow musicians. If you are inclined to enjoy heavier, aggressive music played sincerely, please give us a listen. Keep in mind that for years I have used the monicker "The World Devourer," and that we got our name from Frank Herbert's science fiction novel "Dune," the movie of which Marvel released a comic adaption of! Agent M: Where can Marvel fans go to get more Hulud? Matt Fox: The best places to learn more about our band and be in touch with us are our Facebook and Twitter pages: www.facebook.com/shaihuludofficial Please visit and talk nerdy to us. Excelsior! Hell yeah. Check out Hulud on tour and on the Internets! \m/ \m/ --Agent M I Went to Mars and Hung Out With John Carter
What's the connection, you may ask? Well: 1. Marvel published John Carter comics in the late '70s. 2. Disney owns Marvel and Disney is releasing the new John Carter movie. 3. John Carter is played by Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” 4. Marvel is publishing new John Carter comics. It all comes full circle, really. Anyhow, Disney flew me out with a small number of movie bloggers and we spent a day or so soaking up rad John Carterness. The real action started when we visited the post-production facilities where director Andrew Stanton (who wrote and directed WALL-E & Finding Nemo and wrote a few other Pixar flicks) and producer Jim Morris (a Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic vet) are hard at work finishing the film.
Basically? The folks making the movie are legit and passionate fans, yet fantastic storytellers who can make the tough calls as to what should be in the movie. Hmmm, ya know, that kinda sounds like the crew at Marvel Studios. Back to what I saw, though. Mr. Stanton showed the lot of us the trailer to John Carter(which you can watch below) as well as a few clips from the movie in various stages of completion. I won’t go into the details of what I saw, but I think fans of the books and comics will be into the movie, yet it won’t alienate folks turned off by 10-foot-tall creatures with four arms. Oh, and those creatures look badass.
I’ve got a good feeling about John Carter. More info and fun stuff soon.
